She's still alive

Maybe some of you more experienced parents can explain this mystery. Any time I nurse Hannah during the day she immediately passes out, while at night, when Ed and I have designated it "bedtime" she puts up a fight and won't be lulled to sleep until we've spent an hour feeding, changing, feeding again, and then swaddling and shushing. And then she somehow decides that she is no longer groggy the minute she is laid in her bassinet. At which point she proceeds to make those darling newborn noises that are somewhere between content and fussy so that her devoted parents lie in wait for the next outburst asking each other questions like "does she need to be changed again?" or "could she be hungry?" and "why isn't she sleeping!?!"
It's a good thing she's so darn cute.

She probably has day/night confusion - a lovely period of time young infants go through in which they have their days and nights mixed up. Their parents really love it. They generally figure things out in a month or so.

BTW, I totally recommend the book, "Healthy Sleep Habit, Happy Child" by Dr. Wiessbluth. It is a little disorganized, but has a lot of great info on infant/toddler sleeping habits which I would have never figured out on my own. I highly, highly advise reading it (if you can stay awake long enough :).

Alex did that too at the beginning. We would be up with him for 3 to 4 hours straight sometimes and by then of course he was hungry again and we had to do everything all over. It got a LOT better once we started to feed him in bed for the night feedings. We make sure the room is very dark and quiet. Though I think you are already feeding her in bed, right? But not to worry, this is perfectly normal. Just harder on us parents that's all. ^_^

Oh man, I don't know anything about babies! I can only relate to the "she so darn cute"! Wow you guys she is so lovely. She's probably staying up cause her parents are so cool. Once she gets used to you she'll get a regular sleep pattern. My parent used cloth diapers on me, but they didn't seem like they could hold anything. I wonder how that worked. I can see that Hannah has something much sturdier though. Cool experiement, it should work out fine.

I seem to recall something about a chemical in the milk that I think was called relaxin that has the effect of...you guessed it! that's released when you nurse and explains why you can get drowsy while doing it. sorry, I can't explain that part any further, we didn't go that detailed in my last a/p class. did the nurses talk to you about "forcing the issue" of staying awake during nursing? could help straighten out the day/night confusion that Maria mentioned. hugs, Tracey
